Why is my mower blowing white smoke?

If your lawn mower is emitting smoke, it is generally not in a life-threatening condition.

A lawn mower that is putting out white smoke usually indicates an engine that is burning oil. So why is your mower blowing white smoke? Overfilling the oil or an excess of oxygen within the engine usually causes this. White smoke can also be caused by incorrect oil grades, air leaks, worn cylinder/rings or a blown head gasket. If the engines performance isn't impaired, the smoke that is being emitted is often worse than it looks. If the smoke coming from the mower is white, it will typically go away while the engine runs.

If your mower is new and producing white smoke, the appropriate course of action is to keep the engine running to burn off the oil. If you stop the mower, the smoke will immediately begin again when you restart it. If your lawn mower is old, a stream of white smoke is a sign that the engine needs to be serviced. You can continue to use your mower, yet the engine will eventually lose compression and power.

Your lawn mower's oil capacity is entirely dependent on the specific model and it is important that you refer to the manufacturers instructions.

What if my mower is blowing black smoke?

Black smoke is generally caused from the burning of more fuel than air and often, the cause of this smoke is simple and does not need to be addressed. Engines are sensitive to certain angles and when an engine that contains any fluid is tilted, some of the oil can leak out. If this is the case, the oil will burn off and create smoke - this doesn't last long, however the best way to address this is to keep your engine running and allow your engine to burn off any excess.

Is my lawn mower sick?

If there is not an obvious problem, it is more than likely that the problem is much more in-depth. Check for any air leaks and if you cannot detect a leak and your mower's performance is impaired - you will be required to take your mower to a professional. Unfortunately more often than not, an unclear dilemma is generally a more complicated issue such as a blown head gasket, or worn cylinder/rings.

Keep in mind that your mower is not necessarily broken just because it is smoking - it might just need some tender love and care.
