Are Mower Blades Interchangeable?

HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR LAWN MOWER'S BLADES.

A lawn mower is an investment and provided that it is cared for properly, it will serve it's purpose for many years to come. It is important to keep in mind that certain elements must be replaced in order for your mower to function correctly. A lawn mower's blade is the most essential part of a mower, without it the mower would not serve it's purpose. If you desire clean-cut grass, your mower's blade must be sharp to achieve this. A lawn mower's blades must be replaced after a certain amount of cutting and broken, damaged or mismatched blades can cause a number of recognisable symptoms.

How can I tell if my blade needs replacing?

Damaged blades will cause an excessive vibration within the mower, whilst dull mower blades are usually recognised by an ugly, irregular pattern that is created in the lawn. Mower blades can be sharpened a small number of times to extend their longevity, yet they can only be sharpened so many times before a blade replacement becomes necessary.

Are mower blades interchangeable?

In short, the answer is yes. However, you must ensure that the centre hole and length of the blade is the same as the one you are replacing. It is crucial to check that the hole spacings are correct and that you can completely tighten the bolts as there is nothing you want less than a mower blade flying off at full speed.

How do I maintain my mower blades?

A healthy lawn can be achieved by mowing your grass regularly, however this cannot be achieved with a dull mower blade. A sharp blade will guarantee a clean cut, which encourages your grass to recover faster. If the blade is damaged, worn or bent upon inspection - it is important to replace it. If the blade is dull, but undamaged you can have it sharpened. Some manufacturers don't recommend this, however if it is possible to have your blade sharpened it is recommended that you seek professional help, or purchase a sharpener and balancer to do it yourself. If you decide to sharpen the blade yourself - there are several things that you must do.

Ensure that you maintain the bevel of the blade and sharpen the blade's cutting edges equally. Check the blade's balance, adjust as required and wipe the blade down with a light oil prior to reinstalling it.

If your blade requires replacing it is crucial that you ensure the size of the centre hole and the blade length are identical to the blade that is being replaced. It is acceptable to use a different brand of blade, provided that the measurements correspond.
